RAMOS HOMERS, BUT ‘DOGS DROPS OPENER IN WINNIPEG

WINNIPEG, Manitoba — Jon Weber belted two home runs to lead the Winnipeg Goldeyes over the Saltdogs 9-5 in front of 5,812 fans at Shaw Park Friday night.

Joe Ramos launched a two-out, three-run home run to left in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 4-4, his third home run of the year.

The Goldeyes answered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by Weber’s second home run of the night, a two-run shot off the top of the wall to left center.

Luis Villarreal (5-0) pitched five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out three and walking one to take the loss. Alex Maestri (2-5) went seven innings, allowing nine runs on nine hits to suffer the loss.

Ramos finished the night 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Phil Hawke went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Gavin Dickey and Blake Gailen each contributed with multi-hit nights as well.

The ‘Dogs outhit the Goldeyes 11-9, and have now outhit the opposition in four of their last five losses.

The teams meet again Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. for game two of the three-game series. Ace Walker (2-3, 4.14) will take the mound for the Fish against a hurler yet to be announced for the Saltdogs.
