CUBS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER WITH MARAUDERS

Win Streak Snapped at 14 Games

DAYTONA BEACH, FL – The Daytona Cubs (59-46, 25-10) pushed their season high win streak to 14 games against the Bradenton Marauders (57-47, 17-16) with a 2-1 win in game one, but dropped game two, 4-3. The Cubs used a wild pitch to walk off with the victory in extra innings in the opener. The Marauders jumped out early against D-Cubs starter Brooks Raley in the first game of the doubleheader. Calvin Anderson and Jordan Newton hit back-to-back doubles to jump out to an early 1-0 lead.

The D-Cubs would answer right back in the third inning with a single run of Marauders starter Aaron Pribanic. Mark Reed reached on an infield single, but was able to advance all the way to third base on a throwing error by Pribanic. David Macias grounded out to the shortstop Adenson Chourio which scored Reed from third to tie the game at three.

Brooks Raley finished with five quality inning, but didn’t factor into the decision after winning his previous two starts.

It wasn’t until the bottom of the eighth inning before the Daytona Cubs were able to sneak away with their 14th consecutive victory in stunning fashion. Jake Opitz walked off reliever Craig Hansen to start the inning. Opitz would eventually reach third on a sacrifice bunt from Mark Reed moving Opitz to third. Hansen trying to pitch out of a major jam delivered a pitch way out of reach of his catcher Jordan Newton, and Opitz scored the winning run on the wild pitch.

D-Cubs reliever Alex Maestri (2-1) picked up the win with three scoreless frames out of the bullpen. Craig Hansen (0-1) took the loss for Bradenton.

The Marauders took an early game two lead in the second inning off D-Cubs starting pitcher Chris Siegfried (2-6). Marauders Quincy Latimore homered to deep center field to give the Marauders a 1-0 lead. More trouble would follow Siegfried in the inning after he allowed two more hits including an RBI triple by shortstop Adenson Chourio to give Bradenton a 3-0 lead.

Michael Brenly led off the D-Cubs second inning with a bang by driving his fifth home run over the left field wall off Marauders starting pitcher Nathan Baker to cut the deficit to 3-1.

The Marauders extended their lead back to three in the top of the third inning as Cubs reliever Casey Lambert walked in a run. Catcher James Skelton drew the walk that plated designated hitter Starling Marte.

Daytona got that run back in the bottom of the frame. Shortstop Junior Lake led off the frame with a triple to right-center field and scored on a RBI-single from third baseman DJ LeMahieu.

The Cubs made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh inning as they plated one more run. David Macias singled up the middle with two outs and then scored on a double from DJ LeMahieu.

Casey Erickson (5-2) came on in relief to pick up the victory for the Marauders. Siegfried was saddled with the loss for Daytona after just two innings of work..
